Location
The capital of India, Delhi has a history that spans over several millennia. Situated at the nerve centre of the ancient Asian trade route, Delhi has accumulated extraordinary wealth, but repeatedly lost it to successive foreign invaders who have come knocking at its door.

The walled city of Old Delhi, at one time was known as Shahjahanabad, the capital of the Mughals, while the heritage sites dotting South Delhi from Siri Fort to Hauz Khas, Mehrauli and Tuglakabad are mute witness to the various smaller Muslim rulers who preceded the Mughals.

New Delhi with Lutyens architecture on the other hand is stamped by the mark of British rule, while the concrete suburbs rapidly progressing in all directions are the ultimate submission to modern India's tryst with its global destiny.

Delhi attracts a very large number of tourists from all over the world. It has a lot of historical sites, temples, museums, malls and emporiums which portray the diverse arts and cultures of India.

It is closely identified with Delhi, as "Leaning Tower" is identified with Pisa. Qutub Minar is one of India's most spectacular monuments that can be lauded as 'landmarks in the history of architecture.' It was built in 1193 AD by Qutub-Ud-Din-Aibak and some believe that it was built as a tower of victory to signify the beginning of the Muslim dynasty in India, while others say it was used by the muezzins to call the faithful to prayer.

Qutub Minar continues to be the highest red sandstone tower as well as one of the finest Islamic structures ever raised in India. It is 72.5 meters high and the diameter at the base is 14.3 meters while the top floor measures 2.7 meters in diameter. One has to climb 379 steps to get to the top of the tower. The minaret is covered with intricate carvings and verses from the Holy Koran.

India Gate is one of the largest war memorials in India. Situated in the heart of New Delhi, India Gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It is a prominent landmark in Delhi and commemorates the members of the erstwhile British Indian Army who lost their lives fighting for the Indian Empire in World War I and the Afghan Wars. Originally, a Statue of King George V had stood under the now-vacant canopy in front of the India Gate, and was removed to Coronation Park with other statues. Following India's independence, India Gate became the site of the Indian Army's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, known as the Amar Jawan Jyoti.
